“The Lord Doesn’t Require Perfection, Just a Willing Heart”

A year ago, when I was still in high school, I planned to attend college first before serving a mission. But deep inside, I felt unsettled, as though something was missing.

Everything changed at a young single adult conference. During a devotional, a girl my age asked a visiting Church leader whether she should go to college first or serve a mission. He quoted Matthew 16:25:

“For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.”

Those words pierced my heart and completely shifted my perspective. I decided to serve a mission first and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made.

Preparing for a mission came with real challenges. At times, I lacked motivation to study the scriptures or attend institute. I doubted myself, wondering if I was ready or capable to teach others. But as I prayed and sought guidance from the Holy Ghost, my heart changed. I realized that the Lord doesn’t require perfection, just a willing heart.

I used to think being introverted was a weakness. Approaching people didn’t come naturally, and I worried that I wouldn’t be good at missionary work. But I’ve learned that when we desire to serve, our tongues will be loose and the Lord fills our mouths with His words.

Some friends outside the Church asked:

“Why put your studies on hold for two years? Isn’t that a waste of time?”

I always remind myself that the lessons and spiritual growth I’ll gain from this mission are priceless, far greater than anything the world could offer.

If you’re unsure about serving a mission, pray about it. Ask Heavenly Father for guidance and He will answer you. The scriptures promise:

“If ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you” (Moroni 10:4–5).

And if you ever feel inadequate, remember His promise:

“I will go before your face. I will be on your right hand and on your left… and mine angels round about you, to bear you up.” (D&C 84:88)

I testify that serving a mission is life-changing. It brings you closer to the Savior, strengthens your faith, and teaches courage, compassion, and humility. The Lord knows you by name and if you are willing to serve, He will prepare the way.
