During my 12th grade, I took entrance exams for several prestigious universities in the Philippines. To my surprise, I passed them all, including earning a scholarship from the Department of Science and Technology.
During that time, I had been grappling with a question: What should I do? Should I pursue my education or should I serve? Finding the answer to my question took more than just prayers—it took deep reflection, studying the scriptures, and seeking guidance. I had to sacrifice scholarships and opportunities others might have considered dreams. I shared my decision with my adviser, telling him that I felt strongly about serving the Lord. While he respected my choice, he said, “I’ll support you, but remember, this opportunity may not come again.”
But it wasn’t until I had a meaningful conversation with a tricycle driver that my desire to serve grew even stronger.
The tricycle driver, who was a father and not a member of the Church, shared his story with me. He spoke of his great love for his family and how he was dedicated to helping his child grow. His words deeply resonated with me. I realized that I have been blessed with the gospel and I have the opportunity to share it with others. If I were to go on a mission, I would want to bring the gospel to people like him. His love for his child reminded me of how our Heavenly Father desires the best for all of His children.
That conversation served as a confirmation for me. It became clear that serving the Lord was the right path.
Jesus walking on water and inviting Peter to join Him teaches us about faith. When Peter feared the storm and focused on the winds, he began to sink. But Peter did not sink because of the storm itself. He sank because he allowed his fear to overshadow his faith. He forgot who he was following—Christ, who has power over all things. The moment Peter shifted his focus back to the Savior, he was saved.

For those preparing to serve, the fear of leaving everything behind can be overwhelming. But the Lord reassures us: “Look unto me in every thought; doubt not, fear not” (Doctrine and Covenants 6:36). The miracles we seek don’t happen when we stay in our comfort zones. They occur when we step forward in faith, trusting in God’s plan for us.
I know that His promises are true. He is our Savior, and as we trust in Him, He will lift us, just as He lifted Peter. When we reach out to Him in faith, He is there, ready to help us through every storm.
