Called to Serve, No Matter the Assignment

I was originally called as a proselyting missionary to serve in the England Leeds Mission. After completing my training at the Missionary Training Center (MTC), I served for one month before returning home due to emotional challenges that, alongside major adjustments, also began to affect my physical health. Later, I was reassigned as a service missionary.

At first, I did not fully understand why this change happened. But as time passed, I began to see the Lord’s hand more clearly. I felt His love surround and reassure me that I was still needed, still called, and still trusted. Since my reassignment, I have come to truly enjoy every moment of serving.

When I first began my mission, I had a strong testimony. Yet being closely involved with the realities of the world tested that testimony in ways I did not expect. I found myself asking the Lord “why” in many situations. Still, as I continued striving to center my life on Jesus Christ and focus on serving others, I felt His sustaining power. Time and again, I saw that I was being supported by His hands in every calling and responsibility I was given.

A verse from the Book of Mormon has become especially meaningful to me: “For the eternal purposes of the Lord shall roll on, until all his promises shall be fulfilled” (Mormon 8:22).

This scripture reminds me that the Lord’s work moves forward, regardless of where or how we serve. As King Benjamin taught, “when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God” (Mosiah 2:17). These truths have helped me follow the invitation of Russell M. Nelson to “think celestial.” When challenges arise, I remember that the Lord’s purposes are eternal, and that knowledge gives me strength to persevere.

My desire to continue serving comes from the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Because of Him, we can change, heal, and improve. Through His grace, I am able to focus on my missionary purpose: to help others come unto Christ by serving with loving kindness, ministering in His name through the power of the Holy Ghost, and striving to live as an example of faith, repentance, covenant keeping, and endurance.

To future missionaries, whether you begin as a proselyting missionary, a service missionary, or experience reassignment, be confident in this truth: you are His disciple. Your calling is valid, needed, and divinely appointed. Both forms of missionary service are essential in gathering Israel and inviting others to come unto Christ.

As my mission president once encouraged, and as I strive to live each day, let us be “true forever in Christ.”
